The canopy is the decorative cover at the top of the fan that hides the ceiling bracket and wiring connections. Most canopies unscrew counterclockwise or release via two small set screws. Once the canopy drops, you'll see the wire connections: typically a black-to-black (hot), white-to-white (neutral), and green or bare copper-to-green or bare copper (ground). Ceiling fan blades are almost always made from wood, MDF, or wood-composite — materials that warp when bent and crack when impacted at the tips. Stack the blades flat with a sheet of cardboard or a folded piece of bubble wrap between each blade. Wrap the full stack in moving blanket and secure with tape or stretch wrap. Do not stand blades on their edges during transport — they can shift, tip, and crack. Wrap each glass shade or globe individually in two to three sheets of packing paper, then in a layer of bubble wrap. Label every zip bag before you seal it: blade screws, bracket screws, canopy screws, light kit screws, remote receiver. Tape all hardware bags to the component they belong to, or place them together in a single clearly labeled envelope inside the motor housing box. Reassembling a ceiling fan with misidentified hardware is genuinely frustrating — the screws for blade brackets are often different lengths than canopy screws, and using the wrong ones can strip threads or leave components loose.
Ceiling fan components — especially the blades — are vulnerable to impact and vibration during transport. Load the motor housing box early in the truck so it's secured against the truck wall and won't be crushed by heavier items. Keep blades flat and sandwiched between soft items. Glass shades go in the truck cab or in a clearly marked position where nothing will be stacked on top of them. Attach your ceiling bracket to the electrical box using the appropriate screws. Tuck all connections neatly into the ceiling box, then seat the ball or hook into the bracket and let the motor housing hang freely. Slide the canopy up and secure it.
Reinstall blade brackets to the motor housing first, then attach blades to brackets, using the original hardware from your labeled bags. Tighten each screw firmly but without overtightening — stripped blade bracket screws are one of the most common causes of fan wobble. Reconnect the light kit, seat the glass shades, and restore any remote receiver to its original position inside the canopy if it was disturbed.
Before restoring power, do a final visual check: every blade should be attached at the same angle, every screw should be snug, and no wires should be pinched by the canopy. Then restore the breaker, test the fan on each speed setting, and test the light.
