Locate the cold-water inlet valve above the water heater — it's typically a lever or gate valve on the cold-water supply pipe — and close it. This prevents new water from entering the tank as it drains. If you can't identify which line is cold and which is hot, cold is usually on the right side when facing the unit, but confirm by touch after the heater has been off for a while: the cold inlet line will be noticeably cooler than the hot outlet line.

Two people should be present for this entire process: one to control the dolly and one to stabilize the tank from the opposite side.
Measure your doorway widths before attempting to wheel the tank through. Most tank water heaters are 20 to 24 inches in diameter; a standard interior doorway is 32 inches wide, which leaves very little clearance when the dolly's width is factored in. Protect door frames with moving blankets or foam padding.
